AW: Partnersuche für Norwegen/Schweden im März (und bitte um Fehlersuche)

Yes Nita it might be warm but the weather station is located in the valley and the effect of foehn (föhn in deutsch) may there bring the temp over to +. It is close to the sea you know, and a storm coming in from south west may bring rain. But snow is NEVER a problem in the meaning of too little of it. It is more a problem of too much, just ask the staff at Sørelva Brøytestasjon. They are the people that operates the snow plows that tries to hold the E6 over the mountain open. About 10 to 20 days every winter they do not manage that, and has to close the mountain for traffic.

I have waited sooo many times at Sørelva to cross the mountain, and they often use a convoy of cars with a snow plow first. At Sørelva you may wonder why they have started operating convoy traffic, for there it is calm. But as you are in the convoy and enter the mountain you understand why! Visibility down to a few metres and without the plow first you would end up stuck in the snow. The snowdrifts are 50cm in less than ten minutes.

250cm of snow is nothing for Saltfjellet. I have seen over 10 metres, even the telephone wires were covered! This mountain is a beauty but it demands respect for the extreme conditions that may occur.

Zitat von Nat Bergtroll Beitrag anzeigen
Otto: Is there a specific route you would recommend (for a skier with a pulk sled)? Do you think that Saltfjellet is an absolute top destination (like Sarek)? Many thanks!
Nat there are so many possible routes, it depends on: How fast/ how many days you want to be skiing and also if you prefer a round route or may accept a through route.

Saltfjellet is a top destination based on quite a number of criteria, but not all. If you read my warnings in posting no28, you have a hint.
1: Saltfjellet is a relatively flat high mountain area, with little steep climbs. It is thus an area where the chances for snow avalance is low (under normal conditions).
2: There are quite a number of open huts for shelter in case of bad weather. Both DNT and Statskog have huts here, Statskog is free of charge.
3: Saltfjellet is easily accessible. From Germany the cheapest is to take plane to Bodø and then train or bus to the trailhead you choose. Of course if you have your own car there is even more starting points, but then a roundroute is better.
4: There is no snowmobile traffic in Norway compared to most of Sweden. (Sarek and other NP's in Sweden have no snowmobile traffic either, with a some exceptions)

If you give me a hint Nat of how many km each day that you consider normal for you and how many days you want to ski, I may be more specific regarding routes.

        Thanks, Otto.

"If you give me a hint Nat of how many km each day that you consider normal for you and how many days you want to ski, I may be more specific regarding routes."

Maybe 10 days (+1 reserve day). Not including travel time.
Maybe 10-15km per day (average; depending on terrain and weather conditions). In Sarek I made between 5-40km per day (with skis and pulk sled).

As regards top destination: I would be interested in a scenic route. Huts are not necessary. The less people, the better.

        Many thanks.

Sorry Nat, I've almost forgotten to write the suggestions I mentioned. I have tried to find a way by using google maps or similar to draw a line to exemplify the route I suggest, but I have not found anything. (Btw if you know howto please let me know)

You say the less people the better, but remember that Saltfjellet is in march quite lonely. Even on weekends you will not meet more than a handful of people, and midweek none. All routes may be taken the opposite way.

There are quite a few starting points from the west or north, you get to these by using the bus from Bodø to Glomfjord/Halsa. I have used all these as startingpoint for skitrips. You find the places by using the search function in the map http://ut.no/kart
1: Valnesvatnet, go south to Lurfjellhytta and further south to Bjellåvatnet and end up at Lønsdal or go further north to Sulitjelma passing Argaladhytta and Balvatnet.
2: Sundsfjord or Skauvolldalen. When using Sundsfjord there is a steep road up to the mountain Stifjellet before you put the skis on. At Skauvolldalen the skiing starts at once. Then go south to Fellvatnet, further south to Storglomvatnet, Glomdalen, Sørdalen over a bit of the glacier to Bogvatnet. Turn north-east up Blakkådalen to Saltfjellstua. This part of the trip you surely meets noone! Then the usual route to Lønsdal or continue as in 1 to Sulis.

Another route is to take the bus to Beiarn and start at Reinhornheia just before the tunnel. Then the route to Saltfjellstua and over to Lønsdal and further to Sulis.

These are the most scenic and lonely routes IMHO. I have also walked Saltfjellet from north down south to Bolna and further south to Umbukta. OK route, but more dull than those above. In addition you must then first take bus to Mo i Rana and train back to Bodø, = more hassle.

Hallo!
