Also, I heard that other artifacts have recently been found melting out of the glacier in another location about 150 kilometers from where Otzi was found. If you have information about this I would be grateful. There does seem to be anything about this on the Internet in English.

The Inonotus Obiquus fungus is great stuff. It will catch fire if you simply look at it too strongly. :wink: It works well directly as it is collected from the tree and requires no special treatment. It also smells nice when burining and keeps the insects away. With the hand drill I can make a live coal in only a few seconds using the fungus as my hearth board. It does not require a notch for collecting the hot dust.

In order to make amadou from fomes fomentarious one must boil it for hours in wood ashes. Its messy work.

By the way...we call the poison mushrooms, "toad stools". A man in my town died recently from kidney failure from eating poison mushrooms.

I think it takes much study to distinguish good mushrooms from the poison ones. Its too easy to make a mistake. I will stay with the foods I know. Deer and rabbit and squirrel and turkey.

Do you hunt wild animals...? Is it permitted?

So ein Teil mach ich mir an der Drehmaschine in einer viertel Stunde...umsonst und aus Alu oder was auch immer

Meine 2 Cents:
Der Piston ist natürlich eine reine Spielerei. Er ist streng genommen ein "high tech" Werkzeug aus Holz. Viel zu präzise hergestellt, dass es in einer NOtsituation herstellt werden kann. Ich sehe keinerlei praktische Vorteile gegenüber Feuerstein und Zunder oder dem Magnesiumblock. Mit Verlaub, die Holzwolle aus dem Video bekomme ich mit alleine dem Feuerstein von Ortec MG-Block schneller an. Also große vorteile wie beschrieben sind sehe ich nicht. Dazu, wie Indi sagt der Preis. Dafür kann ich einige Platinkathalytfeuerzeuge kaufen, die auch bei stärkstem Wind jeden Ofen abgezündet bekommen. Ich persönlich konnte nicht überzeugt werden.

The fire piston is clearly not the fastest way to make a fire and I can not deny that its "plaything" or novelty aspect is a large portion of its appeal. People all over the world buy them and sometimes they buy only because it is so unusual. I think there is no one single best choice. I think you should use what ever you feel most competent with.

Michael - You will not find an inexpensive fire piston on the net because they are difficult to make. If I did find a cheap one I would not buy it. The plastic ones on Ebay are garbage. The price is high but reflects the amount of work involved to make the device. If you want to try one you do not have to spend your money. Offer me a good exchange and I will send one to you to play with.

Regarding hunting - we must have a hunting license also. I have modern guns but enjoy using old time guns that fire by flint and steel, "flintlock". They as not fast as other methods but I still enjoy using them.

Prohably not neccesary, but i love precision... and im not just anyone... and ive machined a few other things before, turned or however tinkerd as this laughable firepumpthing..
