I have for some time looked through this site and others for info about walking in italian Tirol. We are two persons and even though we are in the middle 60's we are able hikers. I have found the Meraner Höhenweg to be very interesting. But there are a few questions a norwegian like me has regarding the conditions there. I have found internet pages like Wikiloc and trekking.suedtirol.info and they are good, but maybe there are others also?
In Norway you are always offered a bed in the mountain huts of DNT, its never so full that there are not a space on the floor where you may sleep. I know we have to book in advance in the huts, but my question is how long before you arrive you must book to have a reasonable chance of getting a bed. We pla to be there in the beginning of august. What about delays due to severe weather, or delays due to good weather and a detour to a summit in the area?
Maybe it will be possible to put up a tent in the vicinity of a hut (we shall pay of course) and have the meals at the hut? Then we will have the freedom to take the tour in our own pace. This will also eliminate the next question of dogs on the huts. You see in my avatar that I have a dog, and we cannot go without him. He has no problems with the stony terrain here in Norway, and will surely have none in Italy also. But if we base the tour on the huts alone, will they accept him or have some arrangement available. He may sleep outside.
The last question is about the water. Here we are used to drink water from every brook, river or lake in the wilderness, but this is probably not so there. For the dog I guess it is no problem, he may drink whenever he wants. But for us humans we may either bring bottles of water or have some sort of purification to make the water drinkable. What is your preferred choice for such a hike? Bottles or purification, if purification what metod?
Last but not least is tips of other hikes of some days in the area. We are very flexible due to driving in our own RV (Womo)
Many thanks from Otto
PS: I will be away for the weekend and unable to anwer until monday. I'll take the tour of Syv Søstre http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sieben_Schwestern_(Berg)
