    Letzte Vorbereitungen, einige Fragen (Lappland)

    Guten Abend zusammen!

Frage: Was bedeutet dabei "plötzlich"?

    3. Tagestour

Keine Tagestour ohne Schlafsack usw., so?

AW: Letzte Vorbereitungen, einige Fragen (Lappland)

    http://www.telenor.no/privat/dekning/

    4. An welche Seen denkst du denn?

          He he, yes I do.
Concerning the lakes in the mountains. They are all frosen stiff, you could drive a lorry (lkw) on them now. The ice will last till mid june around 800m height. I have crossed Balvatnet and all the lakes around Sulitjelma around mid may with no problems. Only be aware around inlet/outlet where the ice may be thin. Langvatnet is a bit tricky. Only about 110m above sea level, and deep. Local conditions may vary much, ask at the hotel or at the Daja camp, they should know.

There is on and off cellphone reception in the mountains, mostly off. I have never had any problem with that. If you want to be more secure, then a Spot or similar PLB could be a solution.

Weather forecats is only in english in the summer, when most tourists visit Norway.

Some times the whole mountain is covered in a hard crust of ice. It may be so hard you could drive a car anywhere in the terrain. But it is seldom, and if you are a bit flexible and may look for a good spot to set up the tent, I think you will find it.

But weather is difficult. We have something they call in norwegian "polare lavtrykk", and these occur mostly when wind is from north and north-west. They are extremely difficult to forecast, and may be ferocious in strength. Weather could change from sunny and calm to full storm within half an hour! But quickly come quickly go, the polar storms are over in less than a day, so it is just to dig in and stay calm. We have polar storms about 2-4 times in the whole north Norway every season, so you will be "lucky" to hit one.

Nita tell me what route you have planned. I have skied most of the places where skis are possible in this area, so if there is anything to be aware of I may tell you this.

              Thank you both!

@Otto: you are an angel The information you give us is invaluable.

We are going to start in Sulitjelma and hike at first to Storjordstua (via Balvatnet). I think it will take us about 6 days (snow shoes). Then we will be able to calculate how long we can hike yet. Probably we will go via Saltfjellstua to the Dunderland Station, or, if we have enough time, futher in the direction of Mo i Rana (all in all 13 days).

There are some areas where the mountains seem to be too steep (for example on the north-east the Storjordstua or on the north-west of Dunderland). I don`t think that it will be possible to pass them, but there are some possibilities to avoid it. What do you think about it?

Also möglichst vorher als Wegpunkt ins GPS eingeben.

Nita me and my wife went 4 years ago from Sulis to Lønsdal. We started late from Sulis (had to put one car at the train station in Fauske), about 13 from Skistua and went to Argalad where we slept and the next day we went to Lønsdal. There we took the train back to Fauske. Why do so many people from central Europa insist on using snow shoes as it is so slow and exasperating? We used two days to Lønsdal, you plan six days to Storjordstua.

OK what I really wanted to say was that you must NOT take the shortest route from Trygvebu to Storjordstua. The narrow valley down to Junkerdal Turistsenter where the river runs is dangerous. Only if weather is stable and cold would I take this route. Look at the map http://ut.no/kart If in doubt ask at Fredheim. There is a caravan-park there and some may advice you.

@Bergtoll There are numerous examples here in North Norway about fishermen being surprised by a storm in minutes. The polar storms are quite unusual for the rest of Europa, but they are for real. And they hit the mountains as well.

....because many central europeans, me included, can't tell the front from the rear of a ski !!!
(and, with a pulka, I have met some who were slower than me with snowshoes); though I'm not doubting the advantages of a pair of skis on the feet of an expert, if with skis you can't do an uphill a little steeper than average because you don't know the technique, AND you can't do a downhill properly either because you don't know the technique, advantages of skis have their limits. So speed with skis is a very individual thing!

                    Gruss, Plautze

P.S. the trip with your wife was about 45 kms, right? In my calculation that would be a two days hike of appr.7-8 hours a day, with snowshoes and a 20 kg pulka (depending on the weather and snow of course); but i don't think you bothered with a pulka for a two days trip, or did you?

                    regards...

No it is much longer. The measurement I made showed it to be between 65 and 70km. This group-tour plan shows an estimate of 58km, but then they tok the risky trip through Junkerdalsura. We did not dare to do that, conditions were not good and we did not risk it. So we took the long trip round, approx 10 km extra.

As you see in my avatar we have the dog, and he pulls the pulka. Nice to have some extra lux on tour, as well as things for increased safety.

For me it is because I am from central Europe! Meaning I have to get to the North and back. Travelling with pulka, backpack and snow shoes is much easier than travelling with pulka, backpack and ski. What's exasperating regarding snow shoes?

By the way: Why is speed always brought up as an argument in favor of ski? (Other than the emergency argument which as a matter of fact I doubt a little.)

Sorry I used the wrong word. What I ment was more in the line of exhausting, more work, aso. There was a debate in some US forum, and they all agreed that walking with snowshoes was harder than to ski.

I do not mean to be rude or make a joke of people using snowshoes. But it is significant that the use of these is extremely seldom in Norway and Sweden, but more common in middle europe and in USA. I may understand why it is so in USA, as this was the traditional way for the native indians to walk in the snow. But we are far off topic now so I leave the rest of the comments on this issue.

                              Thank you for useful information!

snow shoes vs. ski: we didn`t find any renting point in/around of Bodø. To buy or to rent skis in Germany and to fly with them was not a good idea this (first) time. But I ask you all: please, don`t discuss it We know all the advantages and disadvantages.

time: as an athlete I´d allways like to go further and faster. And I´m sure we will do more distance as we are planning now But I guessed there are about 60km between Sulitjelma and Storjordstua (without this tricky valley) and we will not start in the morning... We`ll see. Oh yes, I hope we will not need 6 days!

There is no other country I know of with so much useful information regarding nature and wildlife than Norway. For you Nita this site with the latest reports regarding ice conditions on the different lakes. There you see why I was hesitant regarding Langvatnet.

Also the site http://www.senorge.no/ is very useful. You may see weather condition back to 1957 (When I was 10 ) just click on the english flag and zoom in to the area of interest. Both total snow amount, new snow amount, skiing conditions aso is given. It s surprisingly correct, but remember the data is automatic generated from some observations. It may not be correct down to the nearest cm, but gives a good hint what to expect.

Why do so many people from central Europa insist on using snow shoes as it is so slow and exasperating?
Generally i think this is a good thing, most people do not ski at all or not very well, unlike in Norway. In Norway logic, even someone who can not ski or is considered a novice is someone who can, for central eu logic, skil pretty well.
So now take the whole random person from EU who can not ski well with a pulka somewhere in remote jotunheimen. The chances he will suffer an injuriy that will disable him and make him reliant on external help are so much higher in comparison to doing it with just snowshoes.
If you take a tent, your trip is just more nights or shorter, so if you have a specific route its even a LONGER trip, so more joy!

Ikkje sant, Otto?

Ganz, ganz, ganz OT: Genau Coenig.
